The Body
The project explores a non-gender-conforming way of body representation. The figurations in the works draw inspiration from my collection of images representing the queer body in the mass media and combine with mythical elements from the East Asian cultures. These sources of inspiration are collaged, translated into the language of sign and materialized with rice, a dominant symbol for the East Asian identity. All the works are made from the same bucket of rice, highlighting the plastic and fluid characteristic of the material. The almost water-like way of rice echoes the queer theory on the expression of gender and sexuality, which flows under favorable conditions and is prominently reflected in the way of body representation.
